From the East

Matthew Mason - Worshipful Master

WM Jewel.jpg

It’s November already, and this year has flown by.

It has been my distinct honor to have sat in the East, and as I look ahead, I am very excited to help the next set of Officers move into their new roles.

I am so happy that for our Stated Meeting, once again, our very own Brothers Smokey, Wally, and the Cordon Bleu team are going to make us a turkey dinner. I have done a lot of traveling over this past year visiting other lodges, and we are so very lucky that these guys and families not only cook for us, but shop and prepare the meals for us.

Many other lodges go out to dinner or have a meat and cheese tray, and yet our Brothers make FOR US a delicious and wonderful meal. So make sure to come out for the fun.

Bring the wife and family as well. We are a family organization and love to see our partners and the Brethren.

Each month, more spouses and families join us for dinner, which only makes the night even more special.

Speaking of special nights with our partners, Ladies' Night was awesome! If you didn’t go, you did miss out. Our Junior Warden Bill Workman, with his family, Dawn and Ryan, did such an exquisite job planning and decorating for the night. Dawn made some really cool lanterns and Ryan made custom palm tree napkin holders.

The food was excellent and the entertainment was great…..until Worshipful Hixson and I, along with Brothers Workman and Gonzalez, were demanded to perform for the crowd. Well, Eric, Bill, and Moises did well, while your Master may have needed some more lessons. The real performers at the end (both dancers and musicians) were really wonderful to enjoy.

Lastly, I wanted to say how proud I am of Washington 20. At the Annual Communication this past month in San Francisco, our lodge was called out during Very Worshipful Ricky Lawler’s farewell address.

He talked about how impressed he was at how our Lodge handled the Third Degree for Brother Michael Allen back in 2017. It is this adaptation of the Ritual that impressed him so much that we could make sure a good man could experience what it means to be a Mason. Yes, I was beaming with pride as your Master, even though it was you, my Brothers, who made it happen.

This month, we have the Hiram Award Ceremony for Worshipful Francisco Marques, PM. So please set aside 11/23 at 11:23 AM for a celebration of a well-deserving brother. The Ceremony starts in the lodge room on the second floor, followed by a Luncheon in the ballroom on the third floor. See more details in the announcement section of this newsletter.

Also, please make sure you mark December 8th for our Annual Installation of Officers. It should be a great event and one that I will be so proud to see our fellow Brothers move forward in their masonic journey .

I will be there and hope you will be as well.

Turkey, Family, and Friends... it’s November!

It’s time to reconnect with those in our immediate lives and those we lose touch with throughout the year, whether over an indulgent meal, a glass of wine, or a glencairn of scotch.

We are in the second to last month of the year, and time is fleeting. Never waste a view or an opportunity to be with those you cherish in your life. When mired in the superfluities of life, remember you can’t make up for lost time.

Once the moment has passed it is gone for eternity. So, make the effort to create the good times that become cherished memories.

I look forward to spending some cherished time with you, Brethren, at this month’s Stated Meeting and sharing a story, a joke, or perhaps some insight into a topic of shared interest.

Brethren,

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I would like to share what I am thankful for.

First and foremost, God for giving my life meaning and purpose; my family for being my grounding rock and support; my country for Freedom, beauty, and opportunity; my Masonic brothers for traveling with me on this journey of self-discovery and enlightenment.

I am also thankful to have men like Benjamin Franklin and George Washington as brothers in the Craft, who have inspired the formation and direction of this great Nation.

Benjamin Franklin wrote this before Thanksgiving was decreed as an American holiday:

“For peace and liberty, for good and raiment, for corn, and wine, and milk, and every kind of healthful nourishment, — Good God, I thank thee!

For the common benefits of air and light; for useful fire and delicious water, — Good God, I thank thee!

For knowledge, and literature, and every useful art, for my friends and their prosperity, and for the fewness of my enemies, — Good God, I thank thee!

For all thy innumerable benefits; for life, and reason, and the use of speech; for health, and joy, and every pleasant hour, — My good God, I thank thee!”

Benjamin Franklin
“Thanks” (Personal Papers) November 20, 1728

George Washington declared that the necessity for Thanksgiving sprung from the Almighty's care of Americans prior to the Revolution, assistance to them in achieving independence, and help in establishing the constitutional government.

By the President of the United States of America, a Proclamation

"Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor—and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me “to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.”

Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be—That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks—for his kind care and protection of the People of this Country previous to their becoming a Nation—for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his Providence which we experienced in the course and conclusion of the late war—for the great degree of tranquillity, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed—for the peaceable and rational manner, in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted—for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed; and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and in general for all the great and various favors which he hath been pleased to confer upon us.

And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions—to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually—to render our national government a blessing to all the people, by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed—to protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have shown kindness unto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord—To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us—and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best."

Given under my hand at the City of New York the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789.

George Washington

George Washington proclaimed Thanksgiving for the preceding reasons, and I, for one, will humbly celebrate it with deep appreciation for the Great Architect of the Universe for making it possible for such a Nation to exist.

Annual Communication Results

The 175th Annual Communication was held in San Francisco in October, with 1,290 Masons in attendance, representing 283 Masonic Lodges, including our Worshipful Master Matthew Mason and Brother Junior Warden William Workman.

The event's highlight was the Installation of Grand Officers for the ensuing Masonic Year.

Congratulations to our new Grand Master, Most Worshipful Arthur Salazar, Jr.

A few items were approved at the Annual Communication that will directly impact our Lodge.

2025 ANNUAL DUES ($98.50)

The new per capita was adopted and fixed at $68.50, which makes our 2025 Annual Dues $98.50, due by 12/31/2024.

Please allow a couple of weeks until Grand Lodge enables iMember to receive payments for 2025.

You will be receiving an invoice from Grand Lodge in the mail.

However, if you wish to pay before receiving an invoice, please make a check for $98.50 payable to Washington Lodge No. 20 and mail it to 1123 J Street, Sacramento, CA 95814.

Or go to our Square Store and pay via credit or debit card. Online fees will apply.

MINUTES VIA EMAIL

With the passing of Resolution 23-01, Lodges will be allowed to email meeting minutes to all members in good standing. We still need a motion to make this official for our Lodge.

The updated CMC section for Duties of Secretary (805.230) will most likely read: "If authorized by a standing resolution of the Lodge, the Secretary shall provide electronically all minutes of meetings of the Lodge to the electronic mail address of record for each Mason of the Lodge at least seventy-two hours prior to the date and time of the Stated Meeting during which the applicable minutes will be approved and presented to the Master for his signature."

APPLICATION FEES

The new background check fee was set at $40.00, which gives our Application for Degrees the new cost of $239.00 per applicant, a $5.00 increase. Our Application for Affiliation (Out of Jurisdiction) will cost $115.00. This update will not affect the Application for Affiliation (Same Jurisdiction), which remains at $20.00.

Other recommendations and resolutions were approved, some rejected, and about five were carried over to next year's Annual Communication, scheduled for the weekend of October 25-27, 2025.

For a full list of legislation results, please click HERE.

Please do not hesitate to contact me at Secretary@WLN20.org if you have any questions.

Thank you.

The Golden Ratio:

The Divine Beauty of Mathematics

by Gary B. Meisner

The Golden Ratio examines the presence of this divine number in art and architecture throughout history, as well as its ubiquity among plants, animals, and even the cosmos.

This gorgeous book—with layflat dimensions that closely approximate the golden ratio—features clear, enlightening, and entertaining commentary alongside stunning full-color illustrations by Venezuelan artist and architect Rafael Araujo.

From the pyramids of Giza to quasicrystals to the proportions of the human face, the golden ratio has an infinite capacity to generate shapes with exquisite properties. This book invites you to take a new look at this timeless topic, with a compilation of research and information worthy of a textbook, accompanied by over 200 beautiful color illustrations that transform this into the ultimate coffee table book.

Author Gary Meisner shares the results of his twenty-year investigation and collaboration with thousands of people across the globe in dozens of professions and walks of life. The evidence will close the gaps of understanding related to many claims of the golden ratio’s appearances and applications, and present new findings to take our knowledge further yet.

Whoever you are, and whatever you may know about this topic, you’ll find something new, interesting, and informative in this book, and may find yourself challenged to see, apply, and share this unique number of mathematics and science in new ways.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Gary B. Meisner created "Phi 1.618 - The Golden Number" (www.goldennumber.net) in 2001, a leading website dedicated to the mathematics, appearances and applications of the golden ratio.

In 2004, he developed PhiMatrix Golden Ratio Design and Analysis software (www.phimatrix.com), which is used by thousands of artists, architects, designers, and photographers in over seventy countries, as well as in cosmetic medical and stock market analysis applications.

In 2018 he authored "The Golden Ratio - The Divine Beauty of Mathematics" with Quarto's Race Point Publishing Group, which sold in multiple international markets and translations before its October 2018 release.

His lifelong interests in mathematics and science translated into a career in finance and technology. After earning BS and MBA degrees from two top business schools, passing the CPA exam and working in public accounting, he spent most of his career in CFO/CIO roles with operating units of five Fortune 1000 public companies.

He is now an independent financial and business systems consultant, which allows more time to pursue his research, software develpoment and writing on the golden ratio.

Gary's work has been featured in "Da Vinci The Exhibition" at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas. He also was featured in a two-hour educational documentary by EBS in Korea and has been interviewed for articles in the LA Times and elsewhere.

His websites provide an online community in which new findings on the golden ratio can be shared and discussed, and allow him to help others to appreciate the incredible beauty and design in the world around us and to applying these same principles of design to their own creative works.
